One of my favorite things about the work we do is combining mindset with our personal training. It allows us to create long-term success for people when they apply the not only the physical training but mental training as well. This is what makes the difference.
We all want to achieve our goals, and we want them now. We want to push really hard and transform everything. When we finally take action, we are so sick and tired of where we at that we want it gone. So we dive in to try to undo years of damage in 3 months. I get it. I have been motivated by being sick and tired of being overweight, being picked on, lacking self-confidence, and hating not having the results I wanted.
Unfortunately, trying to achieve them right now is why you are going to fail. You started doing your cardio, you did some weight training, you cut out all of your favorite foods and drinks. And it worked! You may have even reached your goal. My brother last week started by jumping from zero exercise to running 4 miles a day the last 3 days.
Great job. The problem is for most of us it only lasted a couple weeks and if you are lucky, a couple of months. You might even have extra aches and pains from pushing as hard as you did. Now, you might even have some extra weight than you did the first time. This is the common path. This is the path that you probably tried dozens of times.
It’s time to take the path less traveled.
Success in any area of life doesn’t come from some massive action done once. Failure doesn’t either. Success or failure of the accumulation of small daily habits either creating your own hell or creating heaven on earth. It’s the food choices, the daily exercise, the daily things you do for your partner.
I want to leave you with 2 main ideas.
1. Who do you want to be your health and fitness 6 months, 1 year, and 3 years from now, 10 years from now?
A lot of times, I get the call when people want to pass their PT test 2 months from now, attend the wedding 60 days from now or a vacation 30 days from now. That’s great. I love that they have the motivation to change now. You might be ready to start for the same reasons! Great, let’s get going. And, I want you to think about the big picture. The long road of your life.
Who do you want to be down the path to a healthy and energetic life? Do you want to be the person in your 70’s rolling around on the floor with your grandkids? What about active hobbies you want to do? How will exercise still be a part of your life? EVEN WHEN YOUR BUSY. Why is this important to you living your highest values to your work, to your business? Play the long game and your life will never be the same. Your actions will start to align with this vision. As you take the road less traveled.
2. Live Intentionally
Consciously think about the behaviors you want to change. Start with the easy ones, and start smart. Plan to reach your goal every day, but do it in baby steps. You will become a different person this way. My brother running 4 miles a day is great. The problem is he isn’t a daily exerciser yet. It would have been better to aim for 1 mile daily. If that’s hard a 10 min walk daily. Work up to 30 minutes.
Pick one area of your life you want to change. Don’t change your whole diet at once. I find people have to eat styles in their life. Eat all the crap we want, or eat nothing, or their “diet” they have to try which is very restrictive. This is why most go through cycles of overweight and losing weight. They don’t learn to have the balance between the too!
Personally, I realized I was eating way too much candy or donuts in the last month or so. So I finished up 30 days of no candy, donuts, or chips. I had one day that I slipped. An emotional day that had me crying as I was preparing to share my story. But, I allowed myself flexibility as meals go. I didn’t have to be perfect. I could have some french fries or pizza. And you know what? I lost 4 pounds.
You aren’t going to change it all. You are going to take the road less traveled. You are going to start small and make changes over the next year. Your results will be slower the first month or so. However, in the next year, you are going to be further ahead than most and the habits build for success. In the next year, you could be down 50 lbs.
We have had over 5 clients lose 45 lbs in the last year. Here is a couple. They just followed the small consistent changes over time. And, they didn’t have to be perfect! They just had to make small easy changes over time.
You can make an incredible transformation this year in your life. But, to do this you are going to have to take the road less traveled. You are going to have to go slow when everyone else wants to go fast. You are going to have to be intentional when everyone else is changing everything. You are going to get started and change have amazing progress.
